Look what I found in the dumpster at my apartment.
I am going to use this for auto X.
The inside is like new and doesn't have any smell (that's important).
It looks like it was in a minor accident or was dropped. See the scratches?
Pretty good for free. What do you think?

from my experience of years of atv and dirt bike riding a helmet should be thrown away after its been in a crash. just as it was. the reason for this is cracking. im not telling you to toss it in the trash again, just check it over really well, if they will even let you use it with visible crash damage. i have tossed many helmets in the past, i just dont like to take the risk, especially now after the whole thing with my cousin a few weeks ago. by the way, nice find.

There's no cracks. Just scuffs. I know the guy was chicken and threw it away because the layed down the bike. Big deal. No one hits their head in Auto X.

Can understand why the guy threw it away, wouldn't take a chance with my head on motorcycle to save a few bucks, but HELL YEAH for autox some polishing/rubbing compound or paint/well placed stickers and that a great find.
Side note don't helmets have a shelf life ??

I totaled a motorcycle and there was only 1 little small scratch on the helmet and it went to the dump.

As posted before helmets are supposed to be replaced even if the exterior is fine. The foam on the inside could have been condensed on impact thus providing less protection in another accident.
For autocrossing make sure the SNELL sticker is recent enough per the rules and depending on the tech inspector he/she might not pass a helmet with that much damage. If you have another helmet I would bring that just in case.

The guy did the right thing by chucking it. Why risk your melon for a measly $200? If you want to get into autocrossing, a helmet is standard equipment.......one without previous damage.
I hit the wall pretty good in Portland a few years ago during a novice conference race, and the first thing the turn worker did when they brought the truck up to get me, was take my helmet. I thought, HEY gimme that back!! That thing cost me a few bucks!! I didn't realize that it was standard procedure to take it for inspection to see if my sick sense of humour was for real, or I DID crack my skull on the rollcage.
Take 'er easy.
